Mercy to implement tobacco, nicotine-free hiring policy September 1
As the single most preventable cause of disease, disability, and death in the United States, the health hazards of tobacco use are well known. To improve the health of our community and fulfill our Mission, Mercy has a responsibility to discourage tobacco use, foster a healthier workforce and set an example for our community.
Effective September 1, 2010, Mercy will only hire individuals who do not engage in the use of tobacco or nicotine products. As part of this new policy, all potential job candidates will be required to take a nicotine test as part of the pre-employment physical examination. All offers of employment are subject to satisfactorily completing the pre-employment process.
Any job candidate who confirms the use of any substance containing tobacco or nicotine on their application or incurs a positive result for nicotine during the pre-employment physical examination will be referred to free smoking cessation classes.
