Mercy Health is adapting its applicant screening process in Ohio to give preference to non-tobacco users, but not prohibit the hiring of tobacco users. This change is being made to relieve staffing issues and support patient care without increasing risk to patients. This new process will be re-evaluated after the first quarter of 2016.
Our long-term position on tobacco use remains the same. All workplace locations will remain tobacco free, and we will continue to offer a tobacco-free credit toward medical plan costs. In addition, we will encourage employees to take advantage of our free tobacco cessation programs.
Applicants will be asked tobacco screening questions. Hiring managers should take the response into account in making a selection with a preference going to non-tobacco users when possible.
